All my chickens and ducks got ate.. But one....

Ok, I had, 6 Rhode Island reds, 4 barred rocks, 7 bantams and 2 ducks all that got ate in my backyard by a dog.. Or 2! We have one duck left, my question is should we take her to a friends pond that has other ducks, or keep her? We don't really want to start our flock all over til next year. I can get one more baby chicken if I need too but nothing extensive yet! Do u think she's ok by herself, she needs a baby chick, or we should take her to our friends????? Thanks for all ur help!!

Hi, Im so sorry about your flock thats so sad. I would also give her to your friends with the pond. She will probably be shaken up after the incidnet and a change of scenery might do her some good.

Yeah, agree, a single chick isn't much company to an adult duck. Plus there's the trauma factor for her to heal of, and while suddenly finding herself in a new flock will have stresses of its own, overall it should be more comforting.

You could ask your friends to caretake her for you if you really want her back, a lot of people are happy to as long as you're not the sort who is unreasonable about any mishaps that may happen. A lot of people, strangers even, have been very happy to let me agist my poultry on their land, often without any payment (I offered, they refused, I insisted, they refused, I gave up)... A lot of them haven't even let me pay for food!

The only thing is that I'm afraid that since she's a pet, and they are "real" ducks, she won't adapt! He doesn't feed them and they can actually fly. She's a Rouen. She was born in march, and has never flown! I don't think she can! And she's fed starter food, she won't even eat scratch! It's been about a week and seems to be ok! Do u still think its best to put her in the pond. I did until I started thinking about her not being used to being a wild duck!

If the discrepancy between the your duck and your friend's is as big as you say, perhaps get her another duck, probably female, for company then. If you get her a girl it'll be lonely, she'll be lonely, they'll only have each other to bond to, but if you get a drake there is a slight chance yours may not be so keen on another female afterwards, which will be inconvenient if you're trying to start back up next year. I don't know, I don't have ducks, but best wishes. You know your duck better than we do.
