I live in very northern mn on lake superior and am getting my first chickens shortly. Anyone with insight for raising chickens in this area please share. Trying to plan a coop right now with extremely cold winters in mind. Grateful for any input!

I'm shivering just thinking about a Minnesota winter - and I don't live there. You been given some excellent links to follow. The "where am I, where are you," thread will allow you to locate and post on your state thread. The folks there should have the extreme weather" Do's and Don'ts" well figured out. Welcome to BYC.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. Alaska Backyard Chickens has a list of recommended breeds for Alaska at http://akchickens.org/getting-started/recommended-breeds/. If these breeds can handle Alaska's winters, they should be able to handle your winters just fine. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in getting your flock.
