Hi all! We live in Iowa and just moved to a new house in Jan. We now have a huge backyard (praise the Lord) and can't wait to get some chickens! We are looking to start with 5 pullets and I am hoping to get a good mix (layers, good with kids, etc). We are in the process of contacting people about buying chickens and hope to finish our coop/run this weekend. It is so funny to use some of these words, as only a week or two ago I didn't even know what some of these terms meant! Oh, I have to say, that just last week I bought A Chicken in Every Yard - Litt and it is exactly the book I was looking for - THANK YOU!
Can't wait to learn more and begin this adventure!

from California!

Congrats on your new home!

Hello! Congratulations on your new place! Chickens are a great addition to a family. I got 9 hatchery pullets of all different breeds. Even as chicks, their personalities were different. Now at 14 weeks, the standouts for friendliness are the Barred Rock, White Leghorn, and Buff Orpington, who will allow some petting and will jump in your lap (usually looking for food!). We also particularly like the Black Australorp and Easter Egger for their calm and docile behavior within the flock. The one downside to the Leghorn is that she can fly (25 feet across the chicken yard and over a 5 ft fence!) although has only done this once.

, and individuals vary greatly, but I would get these breeds again.

Have fun and enjoy your new pets, but beware the "chicken math"!
