Hi everyone, my husband and I just got out first 4 chickens last week. He built a beautiful coop and they have settled in. Of course we have questions and are scouring this site for answers and better ways of doing things. We have noticed lots of flies and we'd sure love to have advice about that. All in all the girls are great. We got a Barred Rock, a silver Wyandotte, a golden Wyandotte and a golden Araucana.

and Welcome To BYC! Sounds like you have a pretty and colorful flock! Here is a nice thread from the Pest forum on dealing with flies
) You can use either fine pea gravel or coarse river sand (not fine sand like beach sand) on the floor of your coop/run to help control flies. Unlike other types of bedding or litter, flies don't like laying their eggs in fine pea gravel or sand. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your flock.
