I just wanted to throw this out there in the hopes that it will help someone. After weeks of internal laying, we knew we needed to put our three year old GLW out of pain. My husband prepared everything, had her in the cone (more than once I believe) and when it came down to it, he couldn't do it. After stressing, feeling all sorts of emotions, including pressuring myself to do it - I feel like if I am going to have animals, especially chickens, I should do my best to care for them and that includes knowing when their time is through.
Anyway, I called some vet offices. Most do not take chickens, the one that I found that would charged $50 just for euthanasia. It would be more to have them take care of the body as well.
Then I called our local Humane Society. They will do euthanasia for $5. $5! They will cremate her body for another $5. I am so relieved to 1. not have to do this ourselves and 2. know that it will be done quickly, compassionately and professionally. I hope this gives someone else who isn't entirely comfortable taking their pet's life another option.
