Aluminum Screen

YES That is what i bought! I got the rolls of ALUMINUM screening. It feels about as tough as chicken wire to me.... Just more attractive.
Now my peacocks have the green powder coated cage wire that I call Zoo Cage Wire

I am attaching my Duck Hut to this with a different theme so I wanted to use different materials.

What do others think?

Does chicken wire keep most of your birds safe?..... If so this aluminum screen will too i think.

Chicken wire will not slow a predator down for very long at all. That is why most people run wire mesh up a couple feet high. Raccoons will reach right inside chicken wire and pull a bird through it...that is a mess!

The peacock area looks nice..but I would still be worried about predators....is the wire buried into the ground and extended out away from the run to keep diggers out?

There are a bunch of discussions of the pros and cons of chickenwire, if you page thru the older posts in this section and read relevant-sounding threads. (There was also one really big thread on it, that I cna't find with a wiggly baby on my lap right now).

Summary: some people have had predators rip right thru chickenwire. Others have used chickenwire for some years with no loss. The difficulty is that you will not have a problem until you have a problem, and when you DO, it is likely to be a very gruesome one, up to and including loss of your entire flock. Your choice.

Good luck,

Pat

I made a huge indoor cage for my cockatiels, made with wood and aluminum screen. They chewed holes in it, and within a few weeks, I had to get a new cage. I know any predator bigger than a little cockatiel would tear the screen up too.

Chicken wire alone is not enough either, speaking from experience. My neighbor's dogs tore up a rabbit pen, and my chicken pen, and killed my rabbit and my silkie rooster. They also tried to break through my pheasant pen, and I saw places where the wire was torn.

You can still use chicken wire to keep out smaller predators, but go over the wire with some tough livestock wire, or even chain link fence. You need something small to keep out weasels, and larger tougher wire to stop everything else. It is like a war zone out there, and our birds are so defenseless. It is up to us to protect them the best we can.

Thanks. I am fortunate that the area there with the peafowl is almost solid gravel not earth. I poured a few bags of cement around the perimeter and sprayed it with the water hose. so the surrounding area has cement coated gravel instead of buried wire in this case. The wire is nailed to a footer board that goes all the way around.

I just found one of the threads on chicken wire

It has me scared. I will exchange the screen for some decent wire tomorrow.

I'm not a predator phobe... but even I wouldn't use any type of window type screen.

Literally - you can just push right through it. I'd think even traditional chicken wire would be better than that. Any kind of chewing or scratching or 'barge my way in' type of critter will go right through it.
