I am planning to hatch some am texas this spring and was wondering how docile are they and everyones opinion on wing clipping. Thank you for all replies.

Mine like to be pet but I was very hands on while brooding. What type of enclosure are you looking at? They can fly really well and anything you have should be below 12" or over 3' to prevent broken necks if they get spooked. They also poop as much as a broiler (meat chicken) and it is very moist. I have mine on wire for their health (I only clean the enclosure once a day) so they are not wading in their own filth.

My enclosure will be 6ft long 2 ft wide 12" height It will be 4 ft off the ground. 4 ft of the length will be run with vinyl coated 1/2 " hardware cloth on the sides and the floor. The remaining 2 x 2 will be the coop which will have a solid wood floor.

Sounds like a great setup! You'll want to treat the floor. They won't need their wings clipped in that setup. I have been told they are really jumpy and jump straight up but I have never had this happen to me. Bring your hands in from the side instead of the top for the first week of the brooder and they will be used to you. After the first week I can put my hand in from the top and none of them get spooked.

Thanks for the info I do plan to treat the floor or better yet if I can find a small piece of linoleum Ill use that. I seen a video on utube where a guy made a hutch that opened from the top guess what happened not hard to figure lol. Good idea approaching the chicks in the brooder from the side thanks. I do plan on keeping the hand contact with the birds. Thanks again
