I just found out that my landlord used Amdro fire ant killer pellets in my yard yesterday. He is removing an old fountain and pond and found lots of ants in the foundation. My chickens have been in the area eating the bugs that have been disturbed. He doesn't have the bag anymore so I cannot read the label and I was wondering if anyone knows how this may affect my girls, their eggs and if we should be eating the eggs.

I have 10 RIR who will be 3 years old in July. The first year they produced an egg per day (approx) but last year production dropped dramatically. I started with 15 and have lost 5 over the last 2 1/2 years. 2 died suddenly, 1 died from wounds inflicked by her fellow chickens and 2 have died after a long bout with abdominal fluid retention which may have been congestive heart disease. I purchased them as day old chicks from Randall Burkey. I am only getting 2-4 eggs per day. They are fed Purina layer and free range on approx 1.5 acres daily. I have had periodic fecals checked and nothing has been found and they do not have external parasites. I add diatomeseous earth to their feed. I chose RIR because the egg production was supposed to so good. I'm not sure what is lacking in their care and was wondering if anyone has any ideas or thoughts. Should I feed more protein? If yes, in what form? The layer is 16% protein. Should I feed more veggies?

Any ideas or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

You can look up the ingredients online.

I would immediately isolate them from the poison and not eat any eggs for at least 14 days! You might be able to find out a better timeframe on the life of ingested poison by doing some research on the ingredients you find online. I would be surprised if you don't lose them though. I know you can TRY to help them by giving them a molasses flush... and there's an epsoms salt flush too. Do a search on this forum for molasses and you should find amounts as they're dissolved in water. Good luck!
