Ameraucana beard cleaning?

Hey y'all!
I have a black Ameraucana who has a very fluffy beard. However, it has very matted, dirty and limp. Do any of you have any suggestions for how to wash it? I tried moistening it with water, but it didn't seem to help. Any advice helps!
