Ameraucana or Araucana?

Also, the pictures I've seen of Ameraucanas seem to vary greatly; tails or no tails, and cheek tufts and no cheek tufts. Just trying to get a good idea of what my girls might look like when they grow up.

Your girls are neither, but instead Easter Eggers.

There's a huge difference between Ameraucanas and Araucanas - They're a seperate breed, even.

Araucanas are rumpless, only come in a limited color variety, usually have tufts (not muffs) and have yellow or willow legs.

Ameraucanas come in a limited color variety too but not as limited, have slate legs, a tail, a beard and muffs, and like the Araucana should only lay blue or blue-green eggs.

Neither are sold at feedstores or hatcheries, but both are falsely claimed to be sold there. Instead what you see and get are crossbred chickens who may lay green eggs and are known as Easter Eggers.

Very nice EE chicks . What you're seeing are muffs , not tufts . Tufts are comprised of shafted feathers growing from a nodule on the sides of the head . There's a lethal gene associated with the tufts , and rumpless breeds are frequently plagued with fertility problems . With the EE's , you are free to breed for any feather color , leg color , skin color , size , or body type ; just can't show them at an approoved show as Ameraucana .

Don't be dissapointed, EE's are some of the friendliest and beautiful egg layers I have ever had.:<)) They are just beautiful whether hatchery chicks or otherwise. No 2 look alike and they are inquisitive and pretty quiet for a back yard chicken. I have no rerets having had these cuties at all.
