I just got 5 chicks yesterday, and they are in the dog's crate. Our dog walks around the crate, tries to sniff, and sometimes barks. I don't let him in the room with the chicks much. But when I do, I am always there with him. What do you think of his reaction? I know that having chicks is new to him but has anyone else had this experience? Would the dog calm down after a few weeks? Should I ever introduce the chicks to the dog? HELP PLEASE.

A good fence between them is my advice. I have a husky and she was killed my chicks this year now there is always a fence between her and the chickens. I am working with her but she has a high prey drive. So keeping them apart is the best for both animals.

Spitz breeds of dogs generally have a very high prey-drive (there area always exceptions but in general this is true). Even with professional training some individuals will never 'lose' this trait. You can try a very strict training regiment, but be aware of the risk...
My parents have a husky and I do love her dearly, and she IS well trained, but the moment she sees something that she thinks of as prey she 'forgets' all training. She's never calmed down around small animals and I would never trust her around my pets or chickens.

I have an American Eskimo mix, she was fine when they were babies. But then they got big and she just wanted to kill them. I wouldn't trust him around them, as I don't trust my dog around them.
