Americanas Egg color

Hi there,
My questions are: How long does it take an Americana to begin to lay. When does its egg get its color?

I have two Americanas. One is 2.5 years old and her egg is pinkish. A younger one about 8 months old I thought was giving me a med brown egg. Then all of a sudden, a mostly green but with some brown egg begins to show up Did she change color or just begin to lay?

I don't think chickens can change the color of their eggs...once they start laying they always lay that color. At 8 months I would say that she just started laying. Also, it sounds like you have Easter Eggers, not Ameraucanas. Hatcheries like to label EEs as Ameraucanas or Americanas but they really aren't. Ameraucanas are supposed to lay blue eggs, not green or pink ones.

I have six EEs that I got at the feed store and they were labeled as Ameraucanas also so I thought that's what they were at first. Right now I only have two out of the six laying so far and they are 30 weeks old. I get one minty green colored egg and one light olive colored egg almost every day. =)

Ditto to above. So nice seeing more and more people give just the right info on EE's vs Ameraucanas so quickly

The biggest change is a green egg going speckled or a greenish egg at the beginning go blue or something, but, only a minor change that happens within a couple days or just a day's glitch.

Thank you. thats what I thought but that she started so long after the rest began to lay. Just really strange.
Yes that is what these girls were stated as being, Ameaucanas. I also got Cooko Maurans (sorry not spelled correctly) instead of Barred Rocks So one just needs to know that will happen.

I have 2 8 month old EE's and they started laying mint green eggs at 8 months. I get 2 green eggs every day so far.

They were told to me at purchase that they were Americaunas and nick named EE due the the green egg shell.

My EE started laying Mint colored at 5 months, I didn't know that about the Americanas I now have to find me some real ones

I have 5 EEs. The one is 7 years old and hasn't laid for years except the ocassional egg. Her eggs were always standard light brown.

The 4 young EEs are 6 months, 1 week old. Three of them are laying. One lays a very tiny, dark army green/olive colored egg. One lays a humongous robbin egg blue colored egg, and one lays a medium sized light blue egg.

One of the EEs hasn't started to lay yet.

No need for real Ameraucanas unless you plan to show. EEs are wonderful birds and are often better layers than true Ameraucana since they're mixed with Wyandotte or other good egg layers.

Oh okay, well I have been reading about the EE versus the Americaunas and some people are so weird about it, are they related at least the EE's and....? Just curious. Mine are so beautiful, ones name is Lucille because she is mainly a red head and her sister is Chicken Hawk because they both look like Hawks because of no wattle or combs. I love my chickens LOL I am excited to see what color Lucille lays, Chicken hawk lays mint green eggs. They seem to darken as they hit light...is this me or is this what happens?

Your EEs have Ameraucana or Araucana somewhere in their ancestry. That's where the blue egg gene comes from. Check out some egg color genetics threads on this site--they're fascinating.
