How much amoxicillin (Fish Aid Antibiotics 250 mg) for a 15-20 pound pet goose? Is there any way to divide up a capsule to get close to how much needed? I mix with water and put in a syringe.

Exactly, how much does your goose weigh?

The amoxicillin dose is 57mg per pound, twice a day. For an 18 pound goose, that'd be about four pills twice a day - just pop it in his mouth. Amoxicillin has a very nasty taste, so I would be hesitant to opening the capsule up and disolving it in anything.

Thanks for your quick reply. I don't know how much she weighs. She runs around free. I'm surprised it's that much, but popping a pill in her mouth would be much easier than the syringe method.

P.S. By the way, is this in the wrong forum? Should I move it to the goose one?

Unfortunately, it is quite a large amount to give. If you have problems administering, you may consider higher potency amoxicillin such as 500mg, or getting something like Baytril.

No, it would be no problem giving them to her, and I do have the 500mg ones, too. It just sounds like such a high dosage, much like what a person would take! :)

Oh, okay. Thanks for that information. I never knew that. I remember once, though, I took a pekin park duck, with an eye injury, to a bird vet . . . when they treated "wild" birds for free . . . and I was telling him not all the liquid amoxicillin dose was getting down the duck's throat, since the duck was being extremely uncooperative; and he replied: "Just give him more. You can never have enough amoxicillin." I thought he was joking. :)

Like you, I was really surprised the first time my vet prescribed it. People, cats, dogs, horse, they all get much less.
