We took our rooster to the vet because of bumblefoot in his left back toe. The vet took an x-ray and prescribed 6 weeks of antibiotics. In the x-ray she said his toe was broken, which I strongly suspected on account of it pointing the wrong direction. This vet was not the chicken vet so she consulted the chicken lady who said the toe needed amputated. When the vet contacted me, I asked about avoiding the $400 surgery with a home amputation using a rubberband. She said, this is the best possible time to do it because he is on antibiotics. I just don' know where to put the rubberband. Do I shoot for the top or by the breaking point? Is there anything I should know? Has anyone done this before?

I had chickens with toe breakage issues. I did nothing, and the toes eventually fell off on their own. Not sure the cause of the breakage, but I suspected osteoporosis type of condition in that chicken. She kept loosing toes until there was not much left. Still stumped along. She lived about 8 years or more. I did not purchase as chick, so not totally sure of age.
WISHING YOU BEST........................ :highfive:
