Hmm... sounds like a interesting thing to see...Maybe it's a fairy egg. They are usually from a tiny piece of tissue breaking loose from the reproductive tract, and the body forms an egg around it. Color can be darker than 'normal' as the pigment coating released has to cover a much smaller area so is thicker. Can happen with any age layer, but more common with older layers.

Looks like they have some sort of mite problem?? on top of their heads?? Sorry I dont know about the egg.I couldn't get a pic of the whole flock but there's most of the flock in that pic!
