Hello, my name is Penny. I moved from the big city to the "country" last year. Actually, I moved to a very small community that is like the country. Until I was 12, we lived in the country...the real country, on a small farm. We had lots of chickens that we raised for eggs and for meat. My Dad was not selective about the chickens we had and they were not pets...who eats a pet? Back then, I really didn't like chickens. They roamed freely and we kids all went barefoot most of the time. Have you ever had chicken poo running through your toes? Shudder, shudder. Although the chickens roamed during the day, we put them in their coop at night. Chickens being chickens, some chose NOT to go into the coop. We kids had to chase the stupid things until we caught them...or until we gave up. It was also the job of the kids to gather the eggs. I hated being pecked by those stupid hens.
BUT, I now have three lovely red hens that I just love. They are my pets and we have a very special common language. I cluck...and they cluck right back. Currently they are free roaming, but will have a house soon. I joined this group to learn how to be a responsible chicken owner and to get ideas about nests, etc.

I think it's not hard to be a responsible chicken owner, whether they're your pets or your food. Good food, good shelter, a routine and a solid awareness of health issues is about all it takes. Have fun!
I will have them soon.
