Another Animal Neglect Case Gaaaaa

Why did they bother listing DUST? Dust happens even in a home with NO pets.
Well, maybe I'm biased, Texas is notorious for dust... *growls*

Other than that, WOOHOO for helping them (the animals)... small cages and feces everywhere is an accident (or on purpose) waiting to happen.

I'm curious though... why was she carted off to the looney bin for that? Plenty of people have animals in similar, or worse, conditions... site the latest salmonella scare... and yet those aren't locked up. Interesting that they committed her.

Poultry is a business, companion animals such as dogs and cats are seen as a specialized thing. Owning 50+ cats generally means a hoarding situation. Owning 50+ chickens means you get LOTS of eggs!

Honestly..is depends on how they are kept..
If the chhickens are kept in small crowded cages or runs, then i consider those folks no better than dog/cat horders... they're both sickos...

I'll play Devil's Advocate here... a breeder (assuming she was a real one and not a hoarder) would have X number of breeding females. Given the economy it's entirely possible that the demand for animals at a price have dropped. Leaving her with a number of unwanted/unsellable cats, both male and female. Those cannot be kept in the same pen as the mother, just based on size, for long. Thus they'd have to be penned elsewhere, which could easily result in unplanned breeding, which would lead to even more unsellable cats.

Cats have an average gestation of 63 days, then milking for four weeks before weaning begins... females are able to breed as early as six months... males about the same, though it can be earlier. So, if a mother and kittens are penned together a son can breed with the mother as early as 5.5 months... creating a new litter... and the again with his sisters within a few weeks... multiplying it exponentially.

If, as a breeder, you had more than one breeding female it would be easy enough to be overrun, with 60+ cats, in as little as eight months... and not a clue what to do with them... taking all those to a shelter would be a death sentence to many, if not most, so I could understand a caring breeder not wanting to do that. (assuming caring breeder isn't an oxymoron to start with) Not to mention being overrun with that number keeping up with the cleaning, feces, etc could be a bit much for a single person to handle.

It is possible that, like so many others at this time, this woman found herself in over her head and feared she had no where to turn that would ENSURE the animals' survival.... not to mention a recoup of her expenses...

Again, just playing the DA here... but how many people in our country have found themselves with a preggers pet, purebred or not, and have been stumped as to what to do? Imagine having many... easy to see it getting way out of hand.

She would have had to display some SERIOUSLY demented behavior for me to deem her worthy of committal. Caring about what happens to your animals, etc wouldn't be enough... even trying to defend her home against attackers wouldn't necessarily be enough cause for this IMHO. Committal is SERIOUS business... it can haunt you for life... and leave others holding the reins to your life. We know at this point that the animals are safe, if only until their visa (so to speak) expires... no idea what will happen to the owner who is now a 'ward of the state". As much as I care for animals, I'm much more concerned with what they've done with this woman. If someone came and took my dogs I'd flip clean out, no doubt... would I also be committed? Forever having that flung in my face whenever I tried to do anything in the future?

Somehow I think this article has left out a LOT of what happened...

In the same token, a "true" breeder would not have become overrun in the first place. She would have already had homes available for the cats instead of placing a "for sale" ad online.

It also states that the home was "filthy" and that several of the cats were emaciated, had upper respiratory infections and were generally ill. That is not a good environment in which to raise healthy animals bred for standard or anyone that is prepared for the birthing of several litters at a time.

To me, this sounds like a hoarding case in which a person was overrun by cats that continued to breed and run rampant in the house.
