In the plans for this year is to put a farm stand at the end of the driveway to sell our various homestead goods, and eggs have always been something I've figured would make for a good draw (though being a bit of a loss leader). The problem right now is, we barely have enough eggs for hatching and eating, and need to expand our flock.

At current, our hens are mostly White Plymouth Rocks, in various groups with different breed roosters for hatching egg and chick sales. I'd like to diversify from them with this next batch.

The expansion breed needs to have the following characteristics:

  • Large Eggs
  • Consistently good production
  • Cold hardy
  • Valuable for hatching (rare preferred, cross considered)
  • Usable cockerel carcasses

Based on my breed knowledge, Dominiques and Delawares would seem to be front-runners, but I wanted to post for others insight and make sure I'm not overlooking anything that would be a good contender.
