A couple weeks ago at a chickenstock I bought 5 chicks. 2 of them were sebrights. I brought them home and put them in all together with silkie momma. She happily adopted them and all was well. Earlier this week, some of the wire in the coop had come up, and the babies got out. I wasnt home so my mom put them back for me and put up a barrier. She said one of the sebrights wasnt acting right, like it was in shock. I got home that night and lifted up the momma and everyone scattered about, looking perfectly fine to me. The next morning the sebright was dead. I thought maybe she hurt herself getting out. Accidents happen, right?
Anyway, all has been normal since then. Chickies have been running around like normal. The other sebright maybe isnt as active, but thats the way she always was. This morning, she was also dead! No marks, no reason to believe she was bring picked on the by the others. It was chilly last night but the mother keeps them warm.
Any idea what could have happened? Are sebrights a sensitive breed? Should I give them another go?

Not sure what could have happened, but I raise Sebrights, and I don't find they're any more sensitive than any other breed that I raise. That probably doesn't help you much, but I just don't want you to give up on them because of this. Maybe these just weren't healthy chicks, who knows?? These things just happen sometimes.

I do have a black sumatra chick that came from the same cage, and she is just as happy as can be. She is the only one who loves being petted, and she had a blast when she got out! Running with all the "big kids," eating bugs, etc.

Maybe the two little Sebrights were just weak chicks. I've hatched lots and lots of Sebrights this year, and lost maybe a couple. You need to get more. They're cool little birds.

If I get more, would it be a good idea to keep them inside under a heatlamp until they are bigger, or see if the mom will accept them?

Do you mean if you get more now? If so, you may want to keep them separate from her. She may not accept them now that she's got her "brood". Is it cool where you are? Do they need a heat lamp?

Sorry to hear about your Sebrights. I'd also say to try your next group inside with a heat lamp.

I can only dream of 60 degrees right now. Yesterday it was 114 outside.
