hi everyone!
Loving the chicken thing! Ds 9 pleaded for chickens, sold me the idea, and now we are hooked. We started with some java eggs last year (that a bear ate this spring!). Sigh. So I'm now online here looking for some good bear deterrent ideas.
Ds is loving the thought of night googles and military fencing!

The predator forum might have some ideas for you. Electric fencing was the suggestion that I was given when I was first designing the coop and was worried about the bears (I am in sussex county NJ, we are overrun).

It's wonderful to see chicken fans from all over! :D

I think we will have to go electric. Thanks for the suggestion JerseyHen! We are currently naming our new flock and definitely don't want to post another obit in the fall when the bear goes through again... (yes, ds names each single one!)

My daughter names all of ours as well. We have lost 3, but no predator attack yet. I imagine it is only a matter of time. In fact, probably today since I wrote that down. There is a show in Augusta NJ in a few weeks, there is a sale are there, if you are still looking. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...y-fanciers-annual-spring-show/30#post_8887295

HI and welcome to BYC from northern Michigan

Bears are an unfortunate predator, as there are few deterrents that work very well - we had one go right through our electric fence last year at 2 am, horses running all over the county in the dark. Ugh!
