I just joined yesterday but have been reading the thread about the 'new horse'..... it's a fun one! It's exciting to see someone taking that 'journey' for the first time

We have a small hobby farm. We just acquired it a few years ago and it's a bit of a fixer upper... Does "Green Acres" ring any bells for the older crowd? lol. We have chicken everywhere! and pigs, and sheep, and goats, (am I missing anyone)... "I" have some pretty good 'beginning the journey' stories... I can tell you!!!

When we first got the sheep my husband decided they would be 'free range', and although I tried to tell him that meant 'living outdoors on pasture', he was sure it meant "free" as in "without fences". So, I let him learn the hard way!

I came home from some outing one day and saw the sheep in our neighbours front yard (quite some distance away from home) and thought "Oh, man.. I better go get them".. So, off I went with my shephards staff to collect our "free range sheep". I had to walk all around their wrap around deck to collect them and noticed all of her pots of mums looked particularly bare.... well, there were stocks, but a noticable absence of flowers: 1,2,3,4,5... **sigh** .. mental note: shop for mums.

On the far end of the porch I noticed a beautiful outdoor lounge, but, some of the pillow cushions were on the ground. Well, that's a quick fix just pick em up, right? Hmmmmm, I wonder if they will notice all that goat poop on them?? On further inspection of the new deck I noticed where they had originaly pooped and walked through it, smushing it into the deck... Ya, they're gonna notice that

Oh, did I forget to mention the outdoor lounge was new? HOw new you ask? It still had the tags on it!! They just got it for the party they were having in 2 days (also why the flowers had been purchased).... A party WE were invited to attend **groan** (that should be a 'fun' party now).

I did some shopping.... brought them some mums.... left an "OMG, I'm so sorry" note and went home and waited for the call.....

They took it pretty well.... Hubby went over and pressure washed their deck. WE offered to buy another lounge for them, but this one was 'on sale' and the last of it's kind. They asked if we could get the cushons cleaned before the party; We did.

We went to the party rather sheepishly (pun intended) introducing ourselves as "those neighbours". They still talk to us.... no, realy!! And hubby learned 'free range' does not mean 'free'... glad he learned it before we got the cows

Welcome to BYC! I loved your story, very funny (now!). What a nightmare though! Good thing you have great neighbours!

Enjoy all the great information here, there are a lot of people that have been raising chickens for years and have some great advice!

Well, he should know by now that NOTHING is 'free!'
we had a few sheep. I feel your pain.
Welcome to BYC! and please keep writing! This is where I come for my leisure reading. we do not bother with the paper anymore, and this is more fun. less bad news. sometimes we get"DOG EATS CHICKEN" or 'SOUR CROP" but most times it's fun news like 'I HAVE PIPS!" or 'NEW PUPPY"
Its like friends and family you don't have to buy a card for.
Welcome to BYC!
