I joined last night. Was so pleased to find such a helpful resources, and such a friendly, knowledgeable community. My name is Jess and I’m wanting to have ducks as pets. I’ve been a serious animal lover all my life, all 63 years! I’ve had plenty of them but with my sweet Leonberger dog passing over a year ago now I’m without a single pet. I miss that constant love and affection so very much! Due to my husband’s mobility issues we cannot have another dog, over concerns about one getting under his feet and causing a fall. Cannot have a cat due to allergic family members and the fact that I’ve made a wild bird sanctuary outside my sunroom and the birds have come to trust me. A cat would be a huge threat to their safety and comfort. My other passion is gardening and I came upon ducks as helpers in pest control. One video of a gal having a small flock of ducks following her around the garden, just as my dogs used to, and I was sold! While I know ducks are not naturally as affectionate as a dog or cat, I read that if you spend lots of time with them they can be good pets, if mostly outdoor ones. I ordered five girls for delivery in May. Then read that if you hatch them and they imprint on you the bonding is even stronger. So, I immediately ordered eggs! Right now I have 4/10 on Day 27 in one incubator and then another 11/15 eggs in a second incubator. I have a brooder box all ready and have begun duck house design and build. We have a lake and stream in the back yard which we share with a number of neighbors, and wild geese and ducks. I don’t want my ducks pooping on the neighbors lawn so I am building them a separate small pond and a couple kiddy cool pool size ones. I am so excited, but also very nervous! I need all the help I can get.
