Hi! I am new to this idea. We moved to our first farm experience 3 years ago. I got my first taste of farm life with the farm owner's horses. This led to getting our first dog-an adorable Beagle who holds all of our hearts!
Last year we moved to another farm, this one with beef cattle. We got our second dog this spring-a yellow lab/German shepherd mix. She also has won our hearts.
All this to say- this former animal-indifferent person is now open to caring for lots of different animals and getting excited about it!
I am hoping to convert our 8x10 unused wooden shed into our coop. I began with thinking of a small coop/tractor idea but quickly realized that would be a waste of money and materials. I realized that having chickens is contagious, you never will have all that you want, and the shed coop could work for less chickens or more chickens, so put your time and money in converting what you have.
I attended my first poultry swap last weekend. I had lots of questions and got many different answers! After talking to people in my area about the breeds they raise and "meeting" their chickens, I am hoping to start with silver laced or gold laced wyandottes, buff orpingtons and maybe a welsummer. Maybe a total of 6-8 to start.
I look forward to visiting here and learning all that I can in order to raise the healthiest flock I can.
Thank you!
