Hi everyone!...Im from Oklahoma and recently got to enjoy some "real" eggs, I liked them enough to spend $1500 and now be the proud owner of my own coop, 9 girls and one Roo....no eggs yet as my girls are said to be a month or two away. My girls are a mix of RIR and the Blk Australorps....well, 8 of em are, I got one Americana (I Think thats what she is) so far so good...Im on my 3rd day and they have become my main focus. LOL

I heard alot about them having personalities and such but never really knew just how much fun this was going to be. They are still in the coop and I want to let them free range but Im nervous.....I know they will do fine but im worried about the Preditors. They have trees and a few good areas to hide and get around but I cant let them out unless Im here all day.....they go into the coop like clock work and when I whistle they come running for treats.

They have a nice coop and I just added a chain link dog run for them to get out of the coop for a little more area.....I will try Saturday to do the free range thing....any tips would be appreciated. They are spoiled already and have become pets! LOL We have named 4 of them and working on the others as we learn more personalities. I have one little girl who seems to get a little bullied by two other hens....any thoughts? this hasnt become noticable until I opened the coop up into a bigger area with the dog run, otherwise everything is going pretty good. Right now Im just learning, I want to free range and try real hard to do Organic ....having a little trouble figuring out where to get it. I know it cost much more but "They" and "We" are worth it.

Welcome to BYC!

Sounds like you have a lovely flock! I don't free range my birds unless I supervise them, which is a couple times a week. We are over run with predators. You have to be prepared to lose some during free ranging. It does happen.

I have been feeding an Organic Non GMO Layer feed from Manna Pro. They also make the same in a Starter feed. You may have to see if your feed store can order it. You can probably get it on line too.

Have you stopped by our learning center yet? Lots of good articles on all the aspects of keeping poultry....

Enjoy your wonderful flock and welcome to ours!

Twocrows,
yes, Ive been reading but finding way more than I have time to take in....Im getting a little each day, Im going to see if I can find that feed!. ;) thanks for the welcome!

gladheart,
its funny because everytime I "googled" something about my chickens I found BYC! lol thanks for the welcome. This place is loaded with good info.

Got started on Manna Pro Organic......they seem to like it but free range and get a good amount of food from doing so....once I let them free range they cut way back on feed.....I did add a second water bucket out where they free range....they seem to drink much more then I ever imagined.

Welcome to the flock, glad you joined us

. If they are eating less feed, they are doing a great job finding bugs and other snacks. Maybe they work up a powerful thirst scratching and digging or it's hot outside.
