Hello,

I thought I would take a second to introduce myself. I am VERY new to the world of chickens. Prior to a few weeks ago, all of my chicken experience has come from buying a whole bagged fryer and cartons of eggs in the grocery store.

A couple of years ago, my husband and I bought 5 acres of paradise in central Cali. We raise miniature horses and thought how fun it would be to have farm fresh eggs. My DH has raised chicken before and built the coop and sent me off to the feed store to buy chicks a few weeks ago. He said get a dozen because half of them always die. Well, I didn't listen to him because a dozen sounded like way too many so I only bought 10... because that's so much better right?

So, I am now the mother hen to 2 Buff Orpingtons, 2 Golden Sexlinks, 2 Black Sexlinks, 2 Ameraucanas and 2 Barred Rock pullets. At least they said they are all pullets. So far they have been very entertaining. They are all doing quite well, growing quickly and getting lots of feathers and starting to hang out on their perches. None are super friendly but the Buff Orpingtons and the Ameraucanas will come take mustard weed flowers from my hands.

I wish I had found this site BEFORE I bought the chickens, but live and learn right? So far all is good and I hope it remains that way. Next step, complete their outdoor yard/run and get or make nesting boxes!

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! Congratulations on your new flock :celebrate Raising chicks is a very rewarding experience and lots of fun too as you have found out. Chicken TV is fantastic, I love watching them going about their chicken business. You have a lovely mix of birds there and some good egg layers.

Wishing you the very best of luck with them all the future. Be sure to ask any questions that you may have, everyone here to help and very friendly.

Enjoy BYC and all the chicken chat :frow

Glad to have you!

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. You have a very nice mix of breeds. Black Sex Links are my favorites as they are very friendly and hardy, egg laying machines. I raised them for years (along with dozens of other breeds and hybrids), and they have been my best layers, consistently churning out more than 300 eggs per hen per year. You should get loads of large, brown eggs from those two girls. Definitely check out our Learning Center at https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. There is loads of useful information there that will keep you from making beginners' mistakes.) Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your flock.
