I am Laurel, aka Eklecktika (I don't know where it came from, I was scrambling to find a name a few years ago, and all my ideas were taken. So I got creative. Anyway)
I've been thinking about getting chickens for several years, never had the opportunity, but it finally arrived. So I have 8 chicks, and have already gotten past the Novice level of Chick'n'math, and am anticipating my Intermediate exams. Meaning, I intended to have three hens, figured I'd lose some through ignorance-induced attrition, bought six, lost one, decided I had to replace her, DS told the chicken guy about how it was his faaaavorite chick that died, and before I could say something, he gave us two free RIR. SO.
Now, we have Evelyn and Greta the Auracanas, Alice and Claire the black Australorps, and Vivian, Samantha, Lydia and Kimberly the RIR's.
I also have an Australian Shepherd named Charlie, who is surprisingly good with the girls (so far) and a few horses. I'm hoping I can get Charlie to decide that the girls are 'his' to protect so they can be out and about with him. I'm also pondering raising a few meat birds, but I want to get my poop system made into a welloiled machine before I add more. I live right smack in town, and suspect I'll be doing well to keep the neighbors happy with the girls. (My backside neighbor is rather...picky. He mops his deck daily.

So anyhow, I'm me, and I have the wild kid who vacillates between being a puppy and a Tyrannosaurus Rex, the flying ball of fur that answers to Charlie, and my 'herd of chickens'!
