I have a flock of 15 babies that hatched February 1st. One turned out to be a roo and was identified by fellow members here on the forum after I put up a picture. Luckily, I was able to find him a good home with two wives that are a little older, but about the same size, so everyone seems happy.

But now, a week later, another one of the girls has started crowing, sort of. It is making that adolescent weird noise when it first comes out of the coop in the morning, but not any other time of day. This one is a barred rock type. Do I need to start looking for another roo home, or is this a passing phase? I hoped that it had something to do with the roo being removed last week. It looks more roo-ish than it did yesterday, but it didn't crow this morning.

Yes, it looks like a cockerel.

The hackle (neck) feathers are beginning to look pointed and I'm wondering if there is not Maran in that background. The legs look pretty white compared to the color they should be for a Barred Plymouth Rock.

You said you removed the other rooster from the pen? That makes sense. The one that is crowing, or at least attempting to, was probably below the other male in the social hierarchy and now that the alpha cockerel is gone...the NEW alpha can rise!!

OH, NO. Not the new alpha rising!

Well, that makes sense. The roo I removed last week, although the same age as this one, was huge and even intimidated me. He liked to look me in the eye and fly up and perch on my forearm to be carried around. I'm glad I found him a good home.

Well, back to Craigslist.

Actually LizzyJo, that one looks like a hen to me (the production red).

She should start laying here pretty soon!

Can you get a closeup of the hackle (neck feathers) and of the saddle (think horse...where would a saddle go on a horse?) feathers?
