I'm posting after a long time hoping to get help with a sick red hen I have. She was in the house maybe three months ago sick. Found her laying down, in pen, and entire bottom of her felt like she had swallowed a water balloon. I read enough to figure out to use a needle to drain out fluid, which was yellow, but didn't look or smell infected. Just ALOT of it. At least a liter.
After I drained off all this liquid, she was STARVING and started eating crumbles and had scrambled eggs, and felt all better. We kept her in house couple more days and then put her back out.
Now tonight my husband brought her in. No fluid this time. No breathing sounds. No labored breathing. She must be starving she's so light. She's not eating at all, even eggs or canned cat food, and she's not holding herself in upward position. She's kind of listing off to the side.

I have a medical chicken book, which is great if you know what's wrong with her, which I don't. I have injectable Penicillin. I don't know what to do, but she's not gonna make it thru the night.

If she already suffered a bout with ascites, she is likely suffering from liver damage.
How old is she?
Do you know if she is still laying or when she last laid an egg?
What is her normal diet when she was eating?

Ascites or water belly can be seen in heart failure, liver disease, cancer, and egg yolk peritonitis. Draining is a temporary fix, and it may need to be repeated. The condition is always fatal eventually. Make sure to use a sterile needle and disinfect the skin before draining. When they get to the point that she is, refusing food and water, I try to make them comfortable in a quiet area so they are not picked on. I started doing a necropsy on hens that I lose, since many suffer from reproductive disorders, crop problems, and cancer. If you do one, take pictures of the organs and post here for help.
