Hello, I had eleven chickens together. One waa sick and died last week. This week I have another chicken acting the same and getting picked on by the other girls ( because she is sick I guess ) they did that to the other hen that died. What could it be, I guess it’s spreading? All the girls food is pellets, usually dumor brand but started getting a brand at Walmart prob three weeks ago for convenience purposes. Should I start an antibiotic something natural not expensive on her or all ? I’ve had chickens for 5 years and never had this happen.
The only thing noticeable to me is She’s isolating herself from the others, her back feathers are down ( the ones that are usually standing up . The hen that died a few day ago did this too
The photo on the left is for now healthy photo on right is sick , notice tail feathers/ back end down.

Has she laid an egg recently? If not, she may be egg bound. Also, how's her crop?

I'm so sorry to hear about your other chicken though... I know the feeling well 😔

I’m not sure since she’s one of 4 barred rocks and they all don’t lay every day. Can they die from that? There was a hen that died last week that acted the same

i don’t know, she’s one of 4 barred rocks, and they don’t each lay everyday. But can they die from that? There was a chicken that died last week that acted the very same way.

They can die from being egg bound, yes. Does she look to be straining or sitting/standing like a pinguin?

If the hen is eggbound it can very quickly become life threatening.
some symptoms are pulsating their butt a lot and it looking like they are constantly pushing. Also sitting like a pingvin(I have had eggbound hens and they usually don’t do that but some do)

Also restlessness and big poops and them not pooping very often, loss in appetite can also be a symptom
It can be fixed very easily, just a warm Epsom salt bath and some calsium pills to give to the hen,u can also lubricate their butt hole (don’t know the fancy word for it sorry) to help the egg pass and then just put the hen in a warm environment and wait for the egg to pass

Thank you, I’ll isolate her and see. But with a hen that acted the same and died last week, seems like an illness spreading more than egg bound , no?

There's a possibility, unless the flock is low on calcium. How old are your hens? Have there been any odd poos lately?

Try to feel under their belly, you can feel the egg if she is eggbound. It could very easily be egg bound, if the hens are lacking calcium they could all get eggbound. Does they have access to shells and how much calcium is in their food?😊
