If the female emu lays more eggs after the male emu has already started to set. How does the hatching work? If he starts with 2 and over a period of 3 to 4 weeks gets 6 more. I hope this makes sense.

ok.. let me see if I understood you correctly..

daddy emu was already setting on 2 eggs.. then mamma emu laid 6 more which were added to the nest at a later day?

if that's the case (and i hope someone who has experienced this first hand chimes in).. I am guessing he may be like other birds and stop setting the nest after the first chicks hatch leaving the newer eggs (especially the ones which were added 4 weeks after the first) behind.

eggs which hatch within the first couple of days might be ok since i doubt he leaves the nest after the very first chick has hatched.. emu chicks don't get up and run on day one... so he would linger around for a day or two.. but I can't see him letting the first chicks that hatched sit around for 4 weeks waiting for the last eggs to hatch

if you are home and have an incubator you could try to keep an eye on the nest then grab the unhatched eggs as soon as he and his chicks leave the nest.. if you get them before they get chilled they should continue to incubate just fine in a bator
Personally .. if it were me and I decided to pick up those extra eggs... I would go with a temp closer to 95.5 in the bator since that's closer to natural incubation temps under a male emu (55 to 59 days incubation at that temp)

Any laid after 6-7 days of a mating will likley be infertile. nature has a way of getting some to wait to hatch and some a bit early. Mine are due to hatch in the next few days. He started setting on them around mid febuary so april 1st will be day 50. I will let him hatch them out natural style. So soon we will see..

Thanks for info! He was anxious he started sitting soon after there was 1 egg then the neighbors saw him up and there were 2. Yesterday his 31st day I saw him up and looked to be 8+ couldn't get close enough to count b4 he sat back down. Thanks again!
