Good Morning,

I read a link off BYC that one of the things that can cause bumblefoot is a roost that is flat and doesn't allow air flow to the foot. If this is the case, would a roost made out of 2"x3" or 2"x2" secured together with the rounded sides up be good because there is a slight groove where the two boards meet? I'm in the process of building my permanent coop (a colossal, exhausting process) and I'm thinking of the permanent roost situation.

Currently I have roosts made out of 2"x2"s attached in the way described and the girls seem content with them, but they're not really very fussy at 12 weeks yet. I'm wondering if the new roosts should be made in a similar manner.

Thanks, Mary

I've never heard that one: air circulation to the foot? Doesn't make any sense.

Bumblefoot is a bacterial infection of the foot, caused when the bird gets a cut or other injury that allows the bacteria to enter. If your perches are rough or splintery wood, they would be more likely to cause such an injury that could become infected, causing bumblefoot.

Sand your perches smooth, make sure they have no rough edges.
