Hello Everyone. This afternoon my dog got her tail stuck on the side of the door where the hinges are. She was stuck for about 10 minutes because the door would not open so a neighbor came and pried it open with tools. She is in pain and has been hiding under the couch/bed the whole day. I gave her some dog painkillers that I had and they seem to be helping. She also can wag in very slightly but it is hanging pretty limp, And her tail which is usually very upright and curled is now facing the ground. Just wanted some advice on what to do. I can get pictures later

It's likely broken and will fixed. Very gently, palpate/squeeze the tail from base to tip, if she yelps or is obviously in more pain when you touch a certain area, she will likely need to see a vet. What painkillers did you give her? Several are poisonous to dogs..

Okay, I will do that. I gave her painkillers from when she had an old injury and the painkillers were given to us by the vet and we had some left.

Ah, poor thing! Without squeezing it, can you VERY gently place the palm of your hand over it to feel the temperature of it from the base of the tail near her body all the way down to the tip in sections? Heat indicates inflammation but may be a good sign as it indicates it's still getting circulation. Cold may mean circulation has been cut off. When I feel for temp, sometimes I find it helps to close my eyes. Good luck with her. Please keep us posted.

PS just because your vet is busy is no reason not to call, be sure and tell them it's an emergency. If the tail or part of it is significantly colder than the rest of it, or if the skin turns black, it could require amputation. When you call, let them know you have this concern and they should get you in right away. Otherwise they might think it is something that could wait several days. Of course one hopes this is not the case, but there is cause for concern. Ten minutes is a long time to have her tail pinched like that!
