Bought a few chicks from our local farm and home the other day. This chick was in the bin labeled as "bantam" I wonder if it is a bantam or not too since it seems a little bit chunky. My best thoughts were a cochin, but the images I can find with baby chicks don't seem to have the stripes on the wing feathers.

I would like to know breed/color of this chick, and if you think it could be a frizzle.

Purchased as "bantam"
Single comb
Feathered legs
legs grayish in color

Thank you!

It could be a dark braham I had a older hen like that and she had the exact feathers but bigger

Thanks for the reply. That was for sure one thought until I saw the single comb. Can Brahmas have a single comb?

Dark brahmas have single combs or mine did anyway or your could just be a mixed breed

The comb is wrong, but it does look like a Dark Brahma otherwise. Maybe its just hatchery quality?

It looks like a partridge Cochin. Yes, the feet are the wrong color. They should be yellow, but partridge is a variety that needs a lot of work in Cochins and its very common for them to have off colored shanks. All Brahma should have pea combs, no matter which variety it is ( but, again, mistakes happen and weird things pop up sometimes).

Thanks for the reply's. This one is basic hatchery stock. These come from Cackle Hatchery. It must be a mystery chick or odd ball. Makes sense that cochins can have that kind of variation. Would be cool to be a dark Brahma with the wrong comb too. I'm so curious to see how this one turns out! I'm still curious if there is a slight frizzle to this one. The feathers stick out more then the others so far. I'll have to post pics in the future of how this chick feathers in.

I think I might have found the answer to my question! I'm pretty sure that this is a silver penciled cochin bantam. I noticed some of the feathers were coming in lighter more white. Cackle hatchery does sell this variety too! I'll post more pics when the feathering comes in a little better so that it is easier to see. I still hope this one has a little frizzle going on too.

Starting to feather in and show color. Thinking it is a she, And that she sure is sweet and cute.
