We are new to chickens and I have a chick that we just have no idea what it is. We bought it along with 4 barred rocks as 3 day olds. This chick was solid black. Now it is developing leopard spots! Any guess on breed and possible sex? We are crossing our fingers for a hen!

I will get pictures of the Barred Rocks in just a few minutes. The chick in the picture is about 4 weeks old I think.

Are the black sex link solid black before they get their feathers? This chick had no color, it was solid black all over before it got feathers. It also seems to be maturing a little slower than the barred rocks and is not nearly as friendly even though they have all be hand fed.

The females can either be solid black or black with red/brown leakage on their heads as chicks.
The males look like a barred rock with the white head spot as chicks.

Here's my non-typical BSL girlie, I think shes so pretty. Most are just the typical black with copper heads or mostly black. Since they are a hybrid, you can get all sorts of surprises :)

She/he has a big comb for such a little guy! Feathers are always changing. I had a chick start out solid brown and now she has lots of different colors!

Acts very much like the hens, nothing like the Roos but does have a biggish comb and the beginnings of wattles from what I can see. Smaller than the barred rock Roos of the same age
