Any Ideas For My Picked On Polish ? They want his "fro" !

Everyone is still young yet........Once he is full grown, being a rooster i am sure his 'studly' behavoirs will kick in and then averyone will be running from HIM.

LOL

Until then you may have to monitor...taking him out comletely may just warrent a reoccurance of the issue when you reintroduce him-

Ideally you want everyone to get used to his 'do' so they can get over it and mellow out about it.

I doubt they are attempting to help his feathers from their shafts- they are just pecking because its different and weird to them. If they all looked the same they wouldnt do it.

Good luck!

I had this problem with my Sultan. She's the only tophatter I have and she was picked on mercilessly by the others. I gave her lots of places to hide in the coop: three doors to run through, and all kids of tunnels. Plus we have two pens, one on the side and one in the front of the coop. This way some birds can be separate from the others and still enjoy the outdoors.

They eventually grew out of it, but she still stays inside most of the time. If I touch her, she immediately flattens her head to the ground to protect it. She looks like she's bowing, which is cute, but sad too that she still feels she has to protect her head. Oddly, she stands on top of the nesting boxes when the hens are inside and pecks at them occasionally. Revenge is sweet, I guess.

So I would leave him in with the others so they could get their pecking order worked out. It will only make it more difficult if you keep pulling him out of the flock. Give him lots of places to hide, and especially if he's a roo, he'll start standing up to the others. Just make sure there are no serious injuries because once they draw blood, it can get really ugly.

Chickens are like kids - usually they work it out amongst themselves, but keep watching just in case.

I also got one of these little darlings as my free chick 3.5 weeks. My little one's "fro" is about half the height that it was and it makes me sad for him/her. I was hoping there was a trick to keeping the other chicks from pecking/plucking.

He actually stood up for himself today outside, I was thrilled! But later the dominant SL Wyandotte really plucked a few feathers out.
He showed him who was boss. I'd rather get rid of the SL.
I would love a few girls for him, good idea! The husband might not like it though, lol.
I understand what was said about me taking him out all the time and reintroducing him. I never thought about it like that! I am just being neurotic and protective!
Someone told my husband today axle grease?! That can't be good! Also, heard about a red paste but not sure what its called. The Agway doesn't carry it anymore.
I think when their area is done, we will make sure he can go wherever he can to get away. Right now out there its just a dog igloo and he's gotten cornered a couple times. Thanks for all your help, I LOVE this website!
