Any ideas of keeping shavings out of water? I know it is probably one of those things were it is just gonna happen no matter what.. thought I would ask anyway. I have marbles in the water as always. I've raised chicks 2other times and I've always wanted to know if there is any "secret" to keeping shavings out of water?!

Once the chicks are about a week old, or big enough to reach it, I usually put their waterer up on a piece of wood, it greatly minimized the amount of shavings that get into it. Also, that dried up thing is the remainder of the umbilicus. Don't pick at it, it will dry completely and fall off eventually, or once you notice that it is only held on by being stuck to some fluff, you can pull it off. (If you pull it off before it's completely healed underneath, BAD things happen!!)

I make a two step platform to set my waterers on. The first platform is high enough to rise above the shavings, but short enough that they can hop up on it. The second platform sits on top of that one just low enough that the chicks can get at the water. Very few shavings that way.

.....Alan.

I have a piece of plywood about t foot square that I put the waterers on to start. Then I use a platform as they get bigger and older.

I elevate mine a couple inches too, with scraps of 2x4 or bricks or whatever I have handy. If you're up to it, you can build a little platform out of scrap wood and hardware cloth. That will keep it up off the bedding and also allow any spilled water to drain away.
