Any tips for picking pullets from the straight run bin?

The ones that wont quit peeping are the hens.

Seriously the roosters stand differently have a slightly erect posture. A fellow I know vent sexes for hatcheries and he can pick out a rooster by the way it stands and then vent sexes for confirmation.

I used the head-dot method last year on SR barred rocks and got all pullets. It works.

some "tricks" i have read are:
hold them in your hand on their back and if they stick both legs out straight they are one gender and if only one leg straightens out then it's the other gender (can't remember which is which though lol)
or hold them on their back and if they fight to get up they are roo and if they lay there and relax then they are pullet

but who knows really?
I would go more for how the chickie stands. even at that early of an age you can get the roo vibe from them most of the time (usually after you have bought them

). my roo's weren't as yappy either. the girls made all the noise.

if your feed store does not have a pullets bin I would suggest ordering them from a hatchery. you will have better odds and a larger variety to choose from!


also in my experience, straight run bins are 75% roos...good luck!

I always pick the smallest runts...I've found out the hard way, by picking the big healthy looking ones are usually roosters. I would also say go with the head dot method too. Your probably going to get some roos regardless, good luck!

Good luck picking! 7 of my 16 chicks were straight run, I bought pullets of my Tetra Tints, Golden Comets and 3 of my Ameraucans. My Brahmas and my other 5 Ameraucans are straight run, I am curious to see how I did as well

Last year the feed store "expert" picked two Turken pullets for me from the SR bin by dangling them from the head. She claimed the girls would hang limp and the boys would squirm. I ended up with one of each gender, so I suppose her method was 50% successful.

THIS year she picked two Silkie pullets for me by checking feather growth on their wings and tails (she claimed cockerels have slower tail feather growth and uneven wing feathers), and the outcome has yet to be determined. Even among vent-sexed chicks I manage to gravitate towards the cockerels and bring them all home.
