So all the pullets are pretty much new layers and boy have they been LOUD. bawkbawkBAWWWWWK. I live in the suburbs and my neighbors shouldn't have to listen to this. Do you all have any tips on quieting them down? My poor boyfriend is taking care of my chickens and he said all of them were being VERY loud and I'm 300 miles away and there not much I can do but give him tips. I told him to lock them all in the coop and put a tarp over it. Maybe trick them into thinking its dark? (though he did not try this because it was 'too much work')

Anyways do yall have any tips on quieting the chickens?

Unfortuanatly ALL hens do this prior and after laying a egg. it's often called the "egg song". You can try keeping the coop dark or moving the pullets into new housing if possible so they won't lay but it is only a temporary solution. It might be a good idea to make the walls of the coop thicker so the noise is muffled. You can also distract them by hanging a cabbage in the coop for them to pick at so they won't feels inclined to spend as long "singing".

Mine are this way too! My brahma and speckled Sussex are the worst. My SS is louder then the rooster across the street.

I free range all day and they still make a lot of racket!

Thank you for your tips. I know this is their egg song, but still I don't want my neighbors to be mad at me. Do they get any quieter when they get older?

go talk with your neighbors. i was so worried that mine would be bothered when i decided to keep a rooster i had hatched. the thought kept me up at night and i felt bad everytime he crowed in the morning. i talked with my neighbors and no one minded. the girls are loud from about seven to eight in the morning. everyone in my suburb is getting ready for or off to work or school at that time. and it helps to provide them with eggs now and then. i also let the neighbors and their kids come over and see the roost and hold the girls. now when they have backyard parties and the guests ask where the crowing and clucking is coming from, they say, oh those are OUR chickens in the next yard.

Not mine. Mine are cranky! They make racket all day, it's more then just an egg song. They are cranky due to adjusting to the heat. They haven't figured it out that it's 20 degrees cooler in the woods by the swamp during these hot hours. The egg song is short. Mine do a BRAAAAAAAAAA BRAAAAAA BRAAAAAA noise constantly. My SS sounds like a loon when she gets going, she's louder then a rooster. I thought free ranging would keep them quiet, but it doesn't. It's the personality of my girls. It's a chain reaction though. Once one starts, they all chime in. I highly doubt I'll get a brahma again. They are stunning birds, but the noise level is too much. I figure since we are allowed 107 chickens per acre that the noise is no big deal. We have several roosters in the neighborhood. I do live on a 4 acre plot and so does most people out here. I love my girls and wouldn't give them up for the world. The chickens across the street make the same noises, so it's pretty normal. In all reality song and wild birds make more and louder noises then the chickens. They wake me up before its light outside. ;)
