I was just curious, as I have had quite a few people stopped on side of road checking out my birds free ranging in woods between yard and road. And heard through grapevine they were going to shoot em til they saw me walk up. Nothing against hunters as i am one. Just unethical ones.

I assume your land is posted. Dont know what your local or state laws say about poachers, but some states take a very strong position and allow farmers/ranchers to protect their animals with force, and prosecute heavily with no sympathy for offenders. I'd find those laws and paint them onto a sign right where they were standing. And get some real or fake cameras to add to the deterrant factor and/or post signs about video surveillance. I'd also invite the local game warden over for a cookout and beer!

Those are the people who give hunters an undeserved bad reputation.

Heard of a guy that had one shot in his front yard. It was a royal palm too.

The owner ended up charging the shooter a hunded bucks and the guy paid off.

It has happened in our community and the guy (shooter) got into some pretty serious trouble. Shot the turkey in it's owner's field right next to the house. He was charged and convicted.
ETA Ours was a Royal Palm as well.

I've never thought of that but I wouldn't be surprised if it happened around here. We've seen poached deer left to rot right across from my house and have gotten no response from fish and game about it. It's unfortunate that unethical hunters seem to represent us all in the eyes of non hunters.

They pull our signs down, now we mark with purple spray paint per our regulations.

But a few years back I kept pigeons, leg bands and all. Our neighbor shot them.

To make matters worse my birds have 46 acres of leaves to scratch, but they wanna go to other side of the road the last couple of days. Thinking I'm going to build a bigger run and keep them in til evening. I hate to do it but between them either leaving land mines in the yard and crossing the road I dont have much choice.

Yikes, seriously, a Royal Palm turkey?! And taking down the signs? That disgusts me.

I don't have any turkeys yet..

Yikes! I was JUST talking to my bf yesterday how we should put bright yellow or orange zip ties around their ankles and put signs up. Ours are Black Spanish, so I wouldn't want anyone mistaking them for wild turkeys. So far our Tom is a local celebrity in the immedaite area, up to a 3 mile range, due to his loud goggling siren. :) Many people will stop and take pictures or pet him, but I just kinda worry about outsiders coming in and stealing their eggs or worse yet... shooting one of them! We don't live by our turkeys.. I live in a city but our cabin is 2 hours from us, so we get up by them twice a week to feed and water. just concered about what could happen while we are gone. Maybe investing in a trail cam might not be a bad idea.
