It's a long story that has it's own thread but, here is the short of it. We have tried 3 times to hatch chicks through our very committed broody hens with no success. We have all but assured our cockerel is either sterile or very low productive.

So...…..we finally broke down and bought hatching eggs. We still "Bless Them" have 3 broody hens. I bought a dozen double laced blue Barnevelder and a dozen black double lace Barnevelder eggs. They will be here Wednesday 7-11-18. If anyone else would like to share this time with us it would mean a lot. We have never had a successful hatch.

The lady we bought the eggs from is the same lady we bought our chicks from a year and a half ago that are now broody. pretty cool. It would be awesome if these hens actually hatch these new eggs.

anyway, day one is 7-11-18 I will update the thread every couple days.

ok, so we have our eggs a day late but all good..

So, day one went as bad as it could possibly be. I went down before work to feed them some grapes and some left over watermelon and as I approached I hear Inna fussing about something.

I open the door to see a 4 1/2 foot Black snake. My heart fell in my pants and then protective parent kicked in. She was fighting the snake and kicked it my way. I grabbed the snake without thinking and threw it into the yard behind me. I looked at Inna and she had a bloody face and 3 of the eggs were broken. That's when pissed mode kicked in.

I know it's not the snake's fault. It's just acting on natural instinct and hunting for food but, I just got those eggs that was very costly and one of my girls were hurt.

I usually just relocate black snakes as they are helpful more than hurtful but since this one knows where my hens nests are, I disposed of this one.

I guess I will get blasted over this one but, what would you have done? Inna still had 5 eggs left and I cleaned her up and put some medicated save one her face.
