I have nesting boxes but this one hen must not have wanted the "stereo type" of the usual hen laying in a nesting box!

She decided instead to make her nest UNDER our steps into our house!!
I also have nests in the nesting boxes of course
This one hen decided to lay an egg in this bowl that I accidentally left outside!
Some of my silly hens will lay an egg or two in the middle of the run where I can't get to or in the middle of the coop or in the middle of the doorway of the coop that goes to the run!!
Or I've found a few eggs just laying in the yard!!
My hens must have been too excited to get out in the morning to get fresh bugs while it's cool out to lay their eggs safely and accidentally sqweezed an egg out on the run!

it was really funny when my fiance and I found out our chickens started laying eggs for us (They weren't happy so they weren't laying until we started letting them free-range) They left us like a trail of eggs from the front steps to the house all the way to the coop and then inside on the floor was a few eggs even! Our coop is about 30 feet away from the steps so I thought it was pretty funny that we left for the day to go shopping or something and then we came home and Joe almost stepped on an EGG!! Then I looked toward the coop and there literally was like a trail of light brown eggs all the way to the doorway of the coop and entrance! That was a very exciting day!! Now I should be having baby chicks hatch anytime now because I have a few Broodies!!

Some hens seem to like a little privacy when they lay, others seem to be DIYer's when it comes to nests! I have had several that scorned the nest boxes and preferred to lay in the corners of the horses' stalls. That didn't work for me; one of my horses developed a taste for eggs.

Some of my hens have sneaked under steps or bushes to lay. I had one hen that " stole" a nest outside the fence, I didn't even know it until one day I looked through the fence and there she was with 11 babies (she always turned up at mealtimes, so I hadn't really missed her). But yes, with free-ranging hens, it can be like an Easter egg hunt every day!
