Anyone ever had to pull a twig out of a chicken?!

Yesterday while I was putting my flock to bed one of my hens was being a particular pain in the butt to get back into the run (a regular occurrence), so I picked her up to march her back home. I was very confused to feel something sharp and pointy sticking out of an otherwise very soft animal, and discovered she had a twig about 3inches long stuck under the first layer of her skin! Like a giant splinter. Poor girl. I have no idea how she managed to have that happen because it wasn’t especially pointy. And the family member I recruited to help out absolutely was not expecting me to say ‘here come pull this twig out’ whilst holding a bird. We got it out with minimal fuss or excess injury thankfully, though I can’t say the bird was pleased with our ministrations. And luckily I don’t think it had been in there very long.
How they manage to achieve these bizarre injuries is beyond me
