I was looking at their website, and am wondering if anyone out there has any of their Mahogany Faverolles? Good quality? Healthy? Opinions please!

My DH was just saying a couple of days ago, that he wanted to get some of those next year! Faverolles are such great birds.

I think that in general, Sandhill has healthy stock and their chickens are good representatives of their breed. I hope you get some more specific input on this thread. I'll be watching, too.

They sound utterly delicious...Mahogany Faverolles...

I had bought three different times of Mahogany Favs and they dont look any different than your darkest pullet. They are beautiful but I had alot of health problems with the last batch I got from them. Lost alot of them and only down to a few handful. I am assuming there was alot of inbreeding going on because this batch had weakness and lack of vigor and a BIG struggle to keep them alive. So I didnt buy anymore of their birds and crossed these Mahoganies with the darkest hens and roos to get some healthier chicks....

I had raised some Mahogany Fav bantams and they are lovely too! Took a Mahogany roo crossed with my SQ FAv bantam girls and got alot of dark chicks and kept two pullets.

What the Europeans call those Mahoganies are "Sport" FAverolles, pretty much like we say Sport marans...due to the color genes.

Good luck with them!

I've only seen one picture, of a rooster. The color on the rooster looked quite different, a dark red mahogany in place of the straw. I'm thinking it was in the gallery on the S.P.P.A. forum, but I don't remember who posted it. So, your pullets just looked like a dark salmon? With a cream breast? I thought they would be more red and solid colored, for some reason.

I want to get more chickens next year, but thinking about it sure hasn't helped me get any closer to making up my mind on breeds and varieties!

Here are the photo of the two Mahogany Fav BAntams...back and front....see comparison with pullet in the middle which she was a Blue Salmon.....

OMGs--I just found this thread, WHAT PRETTY BIRDS!!!

I love love love the BBR Favs. I wonder what the hens look like? The mottled Favs sort of look like a Speckled Sussex Fav cross, LOL. It's strange seeing those wattles on the mottled roo. Wouldn't the beard usually cover that? Looks like the beard is missing...

I actually joined the Faverolles Fanciers earlier this year, sent my money and never heard a word back from them. I wonder what's up with that? I was really keen to get their breeder list at first, then finally (FINALLY!) found one I like independently, thank goodness. Now, though, I'm wondering where I can get some BBRs!!!

How gorgeous. I hope they have the same sweet temperament!

Well I was a member of the Fav club last year, and yes, like you was very disappointed. You only get some emails from members corresponding each other and only got ONE newsletter email. This year I decided NOT to renew....something to do with "favorism" going on in that club...who is out and who is in. Newbies are pretty much isolated from the older members even when I put in some questions or comments, they were ignored pretty much. So, that is why I dont bother with the club and just stick with emailing to Rose or Dick.

You will have to contact Dick Boulanger for those BBR Favs because he is presently raising them. If not, then I am certain he can refer you to someone. If Dick does not respond, then go emailing to Rose Isgrigg.

As for the mottles, Dick is working on them, it will take several generations....if I can say that he might have crossed them with mottled cochins....but it will take several generations to weed out the faults of the Cochin that pops up now and then.

I have NO idea what the BBR pullets but Dick said they look just like the coloration of the BBR OEGB pullets with a muff.
