Since winter here sets everything dormant, I buy extra bags of salad greens from the product dept and containers of blueberries & raspberries to give to my flock. They love it. They also love Corn on the Cob. Does anyone else supplement during the off growing season?

My SIL ius a manager at a IGA grocery, she gets FOR FREE all the greens they throw away usually. My 8 hens get a bag a day --so do the rabbits and goats!

Yes, I do that too. My hens usually are in their molting stage during the winter months it seems here where I live in California. I do get them extra greens and all sorts of fruit and veggies. We don't have snow in our area but we do have dormant stages.

Yes, especially if there is snow on the ground. I feed my ducks salad greens. I start salad green seeds in fall and keep them in a protected spot over the winter just for the ducks. I didn't have enough room to do it for my husband and I this year.

Every year we Can quite a bit of corn, berries, etc. The jars that have hit 3 years old are fed to the chickens over the winter. They really enjoy it and it makes room for next summer's crop.

Also, I hit the fruit/vegetable stands for any through aways. Lettuce heads that are browning are usually in the boxes. Just peal off the outer layers and you get nice lettuce heads for the chickens to tear apart. Occasional I even get a melon in there.

I try to hunt through the fruit & veggie bags and seek out the ones with expired dates, then present them to the product manager who then marks off the bar code so I'm not charged for them. Saves them the work of cleaning them out!
