we added 3 more chicks today to our bunch, this time we got cochins, dont know much about them, the hatchery told us while we were there that they may lay 3-4 eggs a week, but i also read online just a bit ago that their not very popular for eggs, just looks, is this true, do they do poorly at laying eggs?

I had a pair of cochins in the past and the hen never laid me any eggs the whole time I had her. It may have just been that hen so I can't say for certain.

But they are great pet types. And they are really cute too imo. No harder to keep then other chickens. They have short feathered legs (cept for the large type) and round compact bodies with lots of feathers that make them resemble a cheer leader's pom poms.

I've got 3 bantam cochins, one of whom started laying eggs last week, at 5 1/2 months old. In 9 days, she's laid 8 eggs. I don't know about standards, though...

My sister raises them. Hers tend to be late layers but pretty productive once they start. When they were younger they were pretty flighty but once they matured they've calmed down nicely.

Private or quality stock does tend not to lay very well but I doubt you will have as big of an issue with hatchery stock as they tend to be poor quality and not as pure. They do have a tendency to go broody and make great setters and mothers.

Thank you everyone for the information, im new at all this, so im still learning about all the breeds and stuff. we only bought 2 of them and the 3rd one was free, so its not a big loss in money if they dont lay any eggs. Im hoping they do though at least a couple a week.
