Hi there, I just wanted to get some feedback from some of you more experienced chicken keepers about small dogs and chickens.
We have had our chickens for about 8 months now. We have 2 chickens that are eight monthst old and 5 more that are about 5 months old now. We let them out in the yard with us to free range while we are out there and have been training our three Yorke's not to chase them. I have noticed the dogs every once in a while trying to eat the poo from the chickens. Well last Sunday one of my Yorke's got very sick and stopped eating. He only threw up once but for him not to eat is a big deal, he was also very lethargic. We took him to the vet, they did blood work and it came back showing a mild case of pancreatitus. He was running a fever and dehydrated.
My question is has anyone else had a small dog get sick from eating the poo from chickens. I will add that I have two other Yorke's and they do the same thing and have never been sick. Dusty, the Yorkie that got sick is 12 and my other 2 are under 2. Thanks for any help, I wanted the chickens and Yorke's to be friends but I don't want the dogs getting sick!
