We're in Ohio and we tried a peanut plant from Sutherlands a few years ago, but it didn't get anywhere due to squirrels. So this year we picked up another one and we're going to try it in a bucket so we can keep it a bit more protected.

Any advice on making sure it grows successfully?

My 6 year old named the plant Lacy.

Sorry but growing in a bucket won't work. Peanuts flower and then drop a tendril into the ground from the flower and the peanut forms on the tendril. They sprawl so a whiskey barrel size container or a rubbermaid size tote might work. They are very cool for kids to watch grow and harvest. You might try surrounding it with chicken wire to keep out squirrels.
