Anyone out there who has a career or major in Theater Design/Theatrical Design? Such as, Set, Lighting, Rigging, Costuming, ect...

Growing up I have always been into theater, both on stage and behind the scene. Anything from costuming to set design to stage management. Im a freshman at college (Currently doing basics at a Community college) and in my quest to find a degree this one came up as a top choice.

My sister majored in Theater Lighting, does that for stage shows now, but she knew people and so on/so forth.

There is a union, most of them have hiring halls, so they will have advice on how to go about getting into the field. IATSE, they go by Stagehands here locally. I just work with the unions in the area a lot, so that's why I suggest looking into that area.

Most small community theaters are run by volunteers, and have opportunities.

I sort of minored in theater design. I worked in the design shop at my college theater for my work study program, served on the play selection committee and did make-up and costume design for college productions. As part of my work study I did just about every aspect of set building, lighting layout, costume construction, set decorating, prop management etc. I also took several theater design classes. I doubt I could do much design work now, but I loved it at the time.

Working in a small theater doing all of those jobs is a great way to get experience. If your community college has a theater, see what you can do there. It will give you a really good feel for thing; what you like or don't like, and find out where your talents lie.

I earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in scenic and lighting design and have done both in the past. I currently teach theatrical lighting for a university theatre program. What all would you like to know?

Well I was wondering what kind of opportunities there are out there for someone with a degree in Design and Technical Theater (that's how its worded by the college) I was looking at the classes required and it's everything from costume, drafting, and history to Rigging and Set building. Im in CT and have easy access to the train to NYC, and Close to Boston and Providence. Im pretty centrally located. How involved is the feild? Are there separate people for lighting, Set, and Rigging and then you work together with one person over seeing everything? I had the choice between an Act Magnet school, Ag school or regular high-school and I chose ag
