Anyone know if I can give tylan and tetracycline at the same time?

I have a hen who appears to have an upper resperatory infection. After seperating her, I started her on some tetracycline that I had left over from a previous hen's illness. It's been a little over a day since I started the tetracycline. I was reading up, and decided to purchase Tylan 50, as it seems to be highly recommended. I was wondering if I should wait out the 4 days and see if the tetracycline works, or start her on the Tylan. I don't think I should stop the tetracycline at this point?

She behaves normally currently, very perky and curious. She's just got a deep rasp, and appears to have trouble with the breathing.

I recommend that you continue the tetracycline since she's behaving normally. That means she is eating and drinking normally and should have no problems drinking the medicated water. When sick birds usually dont eat nor drink, that's when tylan 50 should be used either by injecting or given orally. If your hen doesnt show improvement several days after the last tetracycline treatment, time to give her the tylan. Tylan is more potent than tetracycline. Of course your other option is to cull bird(s) with respiratory disease(s.)

Thanks for the reply. No signs of improvement yet, but she isn't getting any worse either. I've thought about culling, but don't know how, and don't know anyone who does. I should learn, I think.

Any update on this? I have a flock of sick birds right now that don't really seem to be responding to Tylan50 injections

I have been giving tylan 50 orally for 5 days now and they seem to be getting a lil better but not completely. Still seeing yellow diarrhea here and there too. I'm wondering if I should bump up the dosage. One hen is completely recovered.

Tylan is an antibiotic that treats bacteria in some resp infections. . Respiratory diseases can be from bacteria, viruses, and fungus. Most diseases will last a few weeks or even months, and sometimes may be complicated by secondary infections. Here is a good link to read, and look at mycoplasma gallisepticum, infectious bronchitis, ILT, and aspergillosis for symptoms and treatments: http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/ps044
