Dear fellow duck lovers;
One of our female mallards started behaving differently the last couple of days. She walks around with her head tucked in low, her body somewhat fluffed up and her beak open as shown on the picture. Her call is different too. Is this broody behavior in a mallard?? She doesn't necessarily sit on her eggs though... and none of other females are like this. She eats and drinks fine. I don't recognize this behavior and wonder if anyone has any thoughts?
Thanks much!!

:welcome It's pre broody behavior - she's about to start setting on her eggs.
Appreciate your response; I tried to find information online about broody behavior, but none of the video's or blogs describe what I am seeing, so that had me very confused!

That is how my ducks behave when getting broody. Word of caution is that if she is normally a friendly duck, she might not be during this phase.
Thanks for your answer! As I mentioned to Sourland; none of the information online describes the behavior I am seeing with her, so that had me very confused

I had a white layer who would behave that way whenever she was going to get broody, and, as some others said, my normally friendly duck was defensive; she wasn't too bad when I was near her, but she'd give my husband a very hard time!
